7 categories you can save πŸ’²πŸ’²πŸ’²

Costs have skyrocketed through the roof recently. Whether it is grocery or fuel or bills, there are certain things you can do to save money.

Tip #1: Mortgage

If you are paying a mortgage, negotiate with your current bank or use the services of your mortgage broker to see if your variable rates can be lowered any further. Many lenders are offering discounts to retain clients.

Tip #2: Groceries

One of the biggest savings is to buy only what you need and not waste fresh food or packaged food. The other way to save on groceries is by looking at weekly specials at different shops and making use of the rewards system on offer.

Tip #3: Fuel

I’m not sure if electric cars are cheaper but assuming most people need petrol and diesel to drive around, the best way to save some money is by watching where fuel prices are cheap and then filling up accordingly. There are certain apps (7-eleven has one) that help you lock in a lower price at any suburb and use it another 7-eleven for up to seven days. You also have the fuel vouchers that you receive when you shop at Coles and Woolworths.

Tip #4: Bills

It is wise to compare and shop around utility providers at least once a year. Be sure to compare apples with apples and not apples with oranges. There are some fine prints that can either save you money or cost you more.

Tip #5: Eating out

Food is one of the biggest pleasures most people enjoy. With rising costs, think about how best you can make this work for you. You can get gift vouchers at 10% to 20% off and use it to pay at restaurants. Or, do take aways on those nights that restaurants have specials.

Tip #6: Shopping

Some cultures are good at asking for a discount. If you don’t ask, you don’t know if you will get a lower price. I’ve heard this story about my grandfather who went to the UK in the 1960s. He was visiting and went into a clothing store. Apparently, he asked for a discount, which was never heard of in those days. The owner of the shop was impressed and my grandfather got a discount. Ask and you shall receive.

Some items are now cheaper if you buy them on eBay or Amazon or Catch or any one of the many online shopping platforms. Shop around to compare before you make a purchase.

Tip #7: Entertainment

Who doesn’t love being entertained? Nowadays, you can get coupons for movies, musicals, zoos, you name it. You can buy tickets well in advance or you can buy cheaper tickets through affiliates. Telstra, and RACV all have cheaper movie tickets and save on snacks while at the movies.

Be savvy and I hope these tips help you save some $$$ before the holiday season.
